The Joys of Journalism

The Joys of Journalism will be from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Michael Quintanilla will be explaining the importance and significance of human interest stories. He will also be dedicating a reading of his own story about his fourth grade teacher Mrs. Lazaro. Quintanilla will be joined by a few of Mrs. Lazaro's students and her son, Vincent Lazaro. Judging by his past presentations, this should be interesting.

Michael Quintanilla is a journalist for the San Antonio Express-News. He is famous as a fashion guru from his writings in the Los Angeles Times. Some of his work was included in The Los Angeles Times Pulitzer Prizes in 1992 and 1994. As an award winning journalist, he is widely known for his human-interest pieces, profile writings and personal essays.

Who we are

We come together representing the mass communication majors of journalism, advertising and public relations at the School of Journalism & Mass Communication at Texas State University. Seven of us are taking an experiential mini-session course designed to cram an entire semester’s worth of work into three weeks. For us, that means we’re attending the National Writers Workshop, where we’re blogging on the workshop sessions and offering a student’s perspective on what the pros have to say. The class is led by Prof. Kym Fox, a former editor at the San Antonio Express-News and now the coordinator of print journalism at Texas State. As part of the class, each of us is also working on a research paper on an issue involving the mass communication industry (so if we come up and ask you for a quote or for your perspective on an issue, please help us out – our grades are depending on it!)
