A group of Texas State University students is attending the National Writers Workshop in San Antonio May 19-20 as the focal point of a class: A Seminar in Journalism. During the workshop, the students will offer their impressions of the sessions and the multitude of media professionals they meet.

Who we are
We come together representing the mass communication majors of journalism, advertising and public relations at the School of Journalism & Mass Communicationat Texas State University. Seven of us are taking an experiential mini-session course designed to cram an entire semester’s worth of work into three weeks. For us, that means we’re attending the National Writers Workshop, where we’re blogging on the workshop sessions and offering a student’s perspective on what the pros have to say. The class is led by Prof. Kym Fox, a former editor at the San Antonio Express-News and now the coordinator of print journalism at Texas State. As part of the class, each of us is also working on a research paper on an issue involving the mass communication industry (so if we come up and ask you for a quote or for your perspective on an issue, please help us out – our grades are depending on it!)
Blogging at the conference
Thomas and Lindsey had to sit at the back of the room near an outlet to keep their computer going after a day of blogging.
Kelsey got good at typing in low light as she blogged in the Fiesta Ballroom sessions.
The students were invited to join the speakers for dinner Saturday night.
Veteran Express-News reporter John MacCormack talked to Nick over enchiladas.
Traveling in style
Trolleys are a part of the public transit system in downtown San Antonio. We took this one to dinner at Aldaco's in Sunset Station, the old train station downtown.
Carrie and Charlotte rode in front of the trolley on the way to dinner so they could chat with Eric Nalder.
Old Friends
Texas State alumni attended the conference and spent time catching up on campus gossip. Kirsten Crow (left), a reporter at the Laredo Morning Times, chats with Texas State students Emily and Nick.
Karen (left) and Kelsey spent time talking with Isadora Vail-Castro, a recent Texas State graduate who now reports for the Austin American-Statesman.
The work
The conference meant more than blogging for the students. They also had to write a paper on issues in journalism, so notes and interviews were important.
Karen interviewed John Dougherty after the Alternative Media panel for her paper.
Books for sale
The book table sold works by a number of the authors who spoke over the weekend.
The beginning and the end
Before the conference, NWW organizing committee members Julie Domel, Amy Dorsett (the committee chair), Vicki Vaughan and Kym Fox gather to go over finances.
Boxes from the book sale are packed up as the last of the conference materials are ready to be hauled out of the LaQuinta Hotel after the conference.
